Interview with Biophilicart – Inspire Artventure series -2

By June 15, 2018No Comments

Hello there, welcome to the second part of Inspire Artventure series.

If you missed the first part you can read it here: Inspire Artventure series -1

So this time I am with an artist who started her artventure (Art-Adventure) unexpectedly, I don’t want to break the suspense, you would come to know about it later on in this article.

You know her by the name Biophilicart on Instagram. Her name is Sallyann Lyons. For her, drawings come first before the business.

So let’s head to the questions that I asked from Sallyann.

1) Where do you live? What is the one thing you love the most about the place you live in?

Sallyann: I live in California now (l am originally from the UK), l love the mountains here the most, especially the Redwood forests. They are so peaceful and unpopulated.

2) How did you enter the World of Art?

Sallyann: I began drawing when my husband bought me a full set of Faber Castell Polychromos on the ‘condition that l used them’! I was instantly addicted.
He pushed me to show my work online. He had to push very hard as l was convinced no one would want to see my art.

3) What is the biggest challenge you face professionally?

Sallyann: My biggest challenge professionally is to treat my art as a business. All l want to do is draw, selling art and working on my website takes away from my drawing time so I tend to push that to the background. I am not a good business woman!

4) Who are your biggest influences?

Sallyann: My biggest influences are firstly my husband (who is himself very creative and artistic) and then the animals themselves and the many wonderful photographers who take the stunning photos that make me want to get my pencils out.

5) How do you manage everything- from Instagram to YouTube and after that you also need to complete your artworks?

Sallyann: Managing everything is difficult and l don’t. I try really hard to keep up with Instagram, especially to support other artists where l can. I love seeing the progress others make.
As l mentioned earlier the business side takes a back seat. I do what l can, but the drawing always comes first.

6) How do you seek out opportunities?

Sallyann: Well, l have probably already answered this. I don’t seek out opportunities! I always have ideas in my head, l don’t carry them through, because l would rather draw!

7) How do you build a collector base?

Sallyann: I wish l could answer that one, l can’t because as you have probably guessed by now my sole focus is on the drawing!
I rarely even get around to mentioning pieces are for sale. People usually approach me to buy.

8) How do you navigate the Art world?

Sallyann: Again l just do what l do and don’t even really think of myself as being in the art world. I am just happy to be drawing.

9) How do you price your Artworks? What was the most expensive Artwork sold by you and can you say something about the artwork?

Sallyann: I basically price my art on the size and time a piece takes. Prices range from around $350 – $800.

10) Which current art world trends are you following?

Sallyann: I don’t follow any trends, l just draw what l love and what makes me happy and hope that it makes other people happy too.

One advice from Sallyann to the newcomers in the art space who have just started there artventure is to draw the things you love, don’t worry about what other people are drawing. Certainly, don’t draw to try and get likes or follows.
Draw what you love because it always shows in your work. And never stop. Drawing is a skill not a gift and you can be as good as you want to be if you just keep practicing.

So what are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below.
